What to expect

San Gil pioneered rafting in Colombia: according to the town hall, the first rafting route opened in 1996 on the Fonce, the river that runs through town.

Colombia Travel describes the Fonce's rapids as moderate, so it works for a first time. Everyone gets a helmet, a life jacket and a paddle, and you go down as a group with an expert instructor. Teamwork is everything.

If you have experience and want more, the Río Suárez, further from town, has class IV and V rapids.
